Interview: Ellie Mae

If one thing is certain, it’s that we love our accessories. While we have a wide variety to select from in our closets, one company we cannot get enough of is Canadian talent, Ellie Mae.

A company that offers precious and semi-precious stones in fashion accessories, each of their bracelets are carefully curated to make beautiful pieces that offer natural healing powers and energy. Their pieces are great for stacking on your arm (arm party, anyone?) and creating the perfect layered look.

We recently had the pleasure of chatting with Ellie Waters, the Founder and Creator to ask her a few questions about her amazing line of goodies.

Fashion Translated (FT): “How did Ellie Mae get started?”
Ellie Waters: “Ellie Mae has evolved into what it is today over the course of four and a half years from a variety of different experiences. I had a hobby I turned into a business, which turned into a company after realizing the interest everyone had in what I was creating.”

FT: “Why the focus on bracelets?”
Ellie: “The business concentrates mostly on bracelets because I find I’m more creative with them and I enjoy telling a story through an entire spring or fall line. I love to create necklaces as well, but they either go up on my website, or sold in the flag ship store RIANT because the piece is one-of-a-kind.

FT: “Where do you find your pieces?”
Ellie: “Staple pieces such as metal (gold filed, sterling silver and rose gold), I get with sources I have been using since the beginning. For all of the precious and semi precious stones we go to bead shows or wholesale stores we have been using since the start.

The largest bead show we attend and where we normally find a lot of our materials in Tucson, Arizona. We always get inspired there while selecting and sifting through millions of beads and embellishments. Lately, I’ve been heading to vintage stores and buying one-of-a-kind beads or pieces.”

FT: “Do you have favourite pieces?”
Ellie: “Anything gold. My favourite pieces involve pave stone pendants we use, also.”

FT: “What colour combinations do you find the most versatile for women to wear in your collection?”
Ellie: “I find anything paired with blue stones are the best kind of combinations as they can go easily with any outfit involving denim [but not exclusive too]. Our sterling silver metal is also versatile because it pairs easily with other jewellery.”

FT: “Where do you get your inspiration from?”
Ellie: “My inspiration always comes from music, travel and personal experiences. I love to travel to gain inspiration; I’m currently in England researching our fall 2014. Our spring 2014 line is based on british rock and roll and travels through Europe with my best friend and business partner.”

Ellie Mae is sold online at, in their flagship store RIANT Boutique in Toronto and other boutiques across the country. The prices points range from $40-$150.
