This spring, one of the dominant trends that came down the runway was sheer layers. Flowing dresses, lingerie-inspired tops, or layered skirts are just some of the ways and examples this trend was showcased during the spring/summer 2018 presentations.
But what about real-world application? While many women say they’re interested in the trend, they also quickly admit that they are unsure how to wear it without feeling like they are baring all.
The first thing I recommend is to-do what feels comfortable. As with any trend, this is a way you can shake up your wardrobe if you feel called to-do so. You can wear as much or as little of a trend as you like. For those that want to experiment with this look in small doses, my recommendation would be to opt for a top or skirt that perhaps has some small sheer cut-outs in it so that you get a ‘peek-a-boo’ effect of the trend.
If you’re like me and want to experiment with the trend, but also don’t want to bare all, I suggest layers. I stumbled upon a mesh overlay at Forever 21 while browsing online one-night and fell in love with the outfit possibilities I could create with it. While it’s definitely on the lingerie-inspired side of things, I decided to make this piece more day-time appropriate by layering it with some high-waisted ripped jeans and a relaxed blazer. This way, I still felt covered enough, but also playful. Some glitzy heels, statement earrings and a fringed clutch helped dress-up the piece. I even grabbed a sequin belt for the fun of it.
I loved the end result. I felt sexy, but not too over-exposed. While it’s not something you could pull-off in an office environment, it’s totally something I’d wear out for drinks with my friends or on a date with my hubby.
If any of you are wanting to try a sheer skirt, for example, I love the idea of having a body-suit on underneath (for those that are comfortable showcasing their fabulous legs), or perhaps putting some denim or even leather leggings on underneath with some ankle boots. Super chic.
Would you wear this trend? How would you style it?
