Feeling UnWorthy Because Of Our Size

Through my 20’s and 30’s my image and weight has changed – a lot. Clothing I once loved no longer served my current image and desires, and my weight has fluctuated up and down over the years due to healthy and not so healthy lifestyle habits. What can I say? I love a good glass of wine (or two) and sweets.

Have you ever kept special pieces in your closet that don’t fit incase you may fit into them one day or as motivation to get you to a smaller size? I have.

It dawned on me not too long ago that I, too, had been putting myself off in exchange for an image that was down the road or may never come. I’d found myself becoming less choosey about clothing I wore and was selecting pieces that would suffice as I ‘transitioned’ to my ideal aesthetic.

But styling myself in mediocre pieces wasn’t leading me to live my best life. Styling myself in looks that didn’t make me want to strut out the door in the morning hasn’t made me more motivated to reach goals I set for myself. In fact, I found it did the opposite. I still wasn’t feeling anymore inspired, nor was it affecting my self-worth in a positive way. I noticed a horrible change in my self-talk habits when I looked in the mirror. Internally, I didn’t feel like I deserved the pieces that made me feel special for not being at my goal weight. I was settling — and I’m not someone that is okay with that in any capacity of her life. My body currently sits between a size 10-12, and while I’d love to be the size 4 I was long ago, I don’t want to make myself feel less beautiful for not being that way any longer. Besides that, size has nothing to-do with beauty; it’s our perception of it and how we feel as a result that is the problem.

While having a goal to strive for is great in terms of health, sabotaging ourselves in the meantime is only going to lead us in the wrong direction. After all, what about how you feel now and who you are now? Is that not important?

After all, a size means nothing; it’s a number on a tag, extra fabric, a means of cataloguing, and organizing clothing. It holds no value on me or you as a person. None. Every woman has a unique story, personality, and approach to life that makes her beautiful and valuable. Each women deserves to look in the mirror at herself with loving eyes and feel confident.

It never ceases to amaze me how much clothing and how we dress ourselves can affect our day. It can lift our confidence and help us keep our heads held high or it can assist with making us feel badly about ourselves. Since shifting into dressing for who I know my higher-self is, I’ve been happier. I have more excitement about getting dressed in the morning and feel like I’m ready to slay the day as a result afterwards. Because of that, I’m more productive, more goal oriented, and over-all ready to take on the day on a positive note. Isn’t that how it should be?

I may not be a size 4, but I don’t need to be. The difference is I treat myself now with more kindness and am happier with my journey as a result. The pieces that don’t fit have been stored away in a container (which I recommend everyone doing if you have multiple sizes in your closet) and I’m okay with the thought that they may never fit. If they do, great; if not, I’ve got some fabulous pieces for donation.

love-yourself

I share this because many of my clients bring up similar challenges they face with their self worth as a result of their current image. It’s ridiculous that a number on a tag has had so much control and impacted our self worth in such a large way.

But, by simply wearing what makes us happy and flatters our figure, regardless of our size, our whole attitude about ourselves can be changed. I know, I’ve seen it many times with myself and my clients.

So pull out your special pieces, invest in the blouse or pants you’ve been longing for and that make you feel amazing. Who you are in this moment is just as gorgeous and worthwhile as the image you hold in your mind. Never forget that.
